Potager du roi

Le Potager du Roi
The Potager du Roi (King's Kitchen Garden) is a remarkable garden with a classically preserved design that forms part of a unique overall urban composition.
The historic site of the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage (National Landscape School), the Potager du Roi is a major component of the royal estate of Versailles. Built between 1678 and 1683 at the request of Louis XIV by the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart, it is a unique example of the French kitchen garden of the Baroque period. Both a listed outstanding heritage site and a multifaceted living garden, its original missions have been preserved: to produce, experiment and pass on knowledge.

Le quartier St Louis
This district in the south of the town is made up of two historically distinct parts: Vieux-Versailles (Old Versailles) and the Saint-Louis district proper.
Vieux-Versailles, which corresponds to the site of the medieval village acquired by Louis XIII, is the historic heart of the town.
Stroll through the heart of this district and you'll discover a large number of remarkable and particularly well-preserved monuments, such as the Récollets convent, the Grand Commun built under Louis XIV to house the court kitchens, the former Foreign Affairs and Navy building built under Louis XV...
The most emblematic site in Vieux-Versailles is the Salle du Jeu de Paume, which was the scene of a major episode in the French Revolution.
The other part of the city's southern quarter is the Saint-Louis district proper, which occupies the site of Louis XIII's former ‘deer park’, a hunting reserve that was urbanised from 1685 onwards.
Here you can admire the cathedral of Saint-Louis (1743-1754), a superb building with a fine collection of period paintings, and the King's Kitchen Garden, designed to feed the castle's overflowing population. Continue on to the ‘Carrés Saint-Louis’, a group of small houses built under Louis XV to provide shelter for a new market. It has a very friendly atmosphere!
